CASAS DE DON PEDRO
Description
Located in the northeast of Badajoz, on the banks of the Guadiana , near the reservoir of Orellana , we find the town of Casas de Don Pedro , which owes its name to Pedro I El Cruel , who allegedly proclaimed "Casas veo” (“I see houses”) in relation to this zone.
The urban set of Casas de Don Pedro is based on a popular architecture that is evident in the different manors and stately homes that make up the town, with elements present in them such as rejerias or noble coats of arms . There are also some other monuments in the city center, such as the sculpture "Ayuda al caído" , by Juan de Ávalos . In the main square we find the town hall , portico, and close to this the square of the Sacred Heart , in which is the church of San Pedro Apóstol . Both places would come in another time to be the administrative center and the religious center of the population, respectively.
The aforementioned church of San Pedro Apóstol dates from the late fourteenth century, and is Gothic. Made of masonry and brick, it has a single nave with a wooden roof and a main chapel. At the foot of the temple tower rises Moorish style. Other outstanding examples of Mudejar religious architecture are the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios , which houses a carving of the titular Virgin, around which the patron saint festivities are celebrated in August; as well as the remains of the Ermita de San Sebastián , in a ruinous state. It should be mentioned, finally, that after covering the waters of the García de Sola reservoir, the Hermitage of the Virgin of Las Vegas , a new building was erected with the same name next to the Guadiana River, on the road that goes to Talarrubias .
The most outstanding festivities of Casas de Don Pedro are: the Candelas and the Carnivals (February), San Isidro Labrador , with parade of floats included in May; Corpus Christi in May, a celebration that stands out for the decoration of the streets and the presence of "Los Diablucos " ; San Juan in June and the Festivities of the Virgen de los Remedios in August.
Gastronomically they are remarkable traditional elaborations the products of slaughter and plates like the ajoblanco , calderetas, crumbs ; desserts such as custards, gachones and sweets such as flowers, candelillas and "Bollos de los Santos".
